Mittelstaufenrinne

One of my objectives with my touring in Austria is to start skiing steeper, narrower gullies. As I first step, I took Neil to Mittelstaufen and after a brisk skin up through the woods to the Staufenkar, we began to climb the gully towards the ridgeline. Neil decided to pause halfway and wait whilst I continued to the top on foot to be greeted by a beautiful view from the col south into Berchtesgaden. The 40 degree gully didn't prove too much of an issue and I look forward to some steeper lines to come!

Watzmannhaus

Neil joined me for a weekend of touring in Berchtesgaden and we warmed up with a skin up to the Watzmannhaus beneath the Watzmann. Commonly skiied as an out-and-back route, we instead hiked down the short steep ridge behind the hut and skiied the slopes down to the north east, an excellent variation.

44 hours in Daren Cilau

For my first ever caving trip, Neil Cox took me into Daren Cilau for 44 hours of adventure. The entrance passageways ("formidable") were quite some introduction but the tunnels soon opened out into an incredible, damp, dark, bizarre and beautiful little underground world. Caving is really nothing like climbing at all.
