Descent from Simonyhütte

Day 2 with Tom, Ros and Erinna. We descended from the Simonyhütte right down to the valley floor - an excellent test of the gradient limits of snowshoes and the differences between our Decathlon and Hobbs models. A long, fun, powdery day out!

Avalanche training on Dachstein

Tom and Ros were visiting for the weekend and the after a week of snow and rain, the weather was absolutely perfect for us.

We took the lift up to Dachstein from Obertraun and snowshoed towards the Simonyhutte. On the way I ran a mini avalanche training session them. Trying to teach something is definitely a good way to learn it! Thankfully they successfully rescued me three.

Flachau

For what was likely to be our final piste day of the season, I took Erinna to Flachau for some red runs and Mozart-themed lifts. In today’s lesson we covered side slipping, traversing steep slopes, rotation about the hips and beginnings of parallel turns. Amazing to see how far she has come in just one winter.

Saalbach with Doug and Georgia

A day out in Saalbach, where Doug and I hunted out the best off piste descents to drag the unsuspecting Georgia through. The plan worked perfectly.

Mittelstaufenrinne

One of my objectives with my touring in Austria is to start skiing steeper, narrower gullies. As I first step, I took Neil to Mittelstaufen and after a brisk skin up through the woods to the Staufenkar, we began to climb the gully towards the ridgeline. Neil decided to pause halfway and wait whilst I continued to the top on foot to be greeted by a beautiful view from the col south into Berchtesgaden. The 40 degree gully didn't prove too much of an issue and I look forward to some steeper lines to come!
