Mt Robert Ridge

A two day trip of stark weather contrasts. The 6+ hour ascent to the Angelus Hut along the Travers-Cascade Route was walked in heavy rain and poor visibility. After a night in the hut to dry and refuel, we returned along the Robert Ridge Route and down the Pinchgut Track in glorious sunshine with a cracking inversion in the valleys below. The ridge had been described as something akin to Crib Goch by some of the DOC staff but it turned out to significantly more benign - much to Erinna's delight!

Abel Tasman

The Abel Tasman coastline is pretty and touristy, but the actual five day coastal hike is fairly monotonous. Erinna and I caught a boat around to one of the bays and opted instead for a single day trek back via Cleopatra's Pool.

Tongariro Northern Circuit

It's not often you get to wild camp in an ancient lava field, waking up to views of a perfect volcanic cone. Erinna and I backpacked the three day loop of Mount Ngauruhoe, famous worldwide for its role as Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings. Stunningly volcanic scenery, blue lakes, sulphur vents and beautiful sunrises. We opted not to climb the huge scree slope to the volcanic summit, which was a wise choice as we heard the screams of descending hikers dodging falling boulders on the steep path up and down.

Cannock by night

Inspired by my new found love of mountain biking I was persuaded to join my office on a night trip around the Cannock Chase mountain biking course. It turned out to be 15 hard, tiring miles in the dark - a knackering yet enjoyable mini-adventure.

Avalanche training at Glenmore

Ahead of our planned ski touring in April, myself and Steve booked onto a weekend course at Glenmore Lodge along with Becky and Pete. The snow conditions were perfect for learning about avalanche danger and I particularly enjoyed the large quantities of digging and science involved in the course. It was also my first time at Glenmore and the food, dorms and facilities were superb.

Grizedale Mountain Biking

My first ever mountain biking course, Craig led us around the North Face Trail at Grizedale which was great fun and very manageable, despite the 'difficult' label. 10 miles of climbs, technical drops and descents, I've never gone from dismissing to loving a sport so fast before.
