Untersberg 2

A second trip up the Doppelsteig route on the Untersberg with Erinna. This time, without a big covering of wet snow, we completed the route!

Klettersteig on the Grünstein

A good day out on the Grünstein, climbing my first Austrian klettersteig "Hotelroute" with Rebecca.

Ostwandverschneidung

Thomas, local climber and occasional poster on UKC, kindly offered to introduce me to the steep limestone multipitch of Untersberg. The climbing was far from the polished, traffic-filled Avon Gorge, although Thomas let me lead the last pitch of sketchy, loose rubble to let me feel "at home". A very different style of climbing to much of the mountain trad in the UK, but one I imagine I will get used to.

Dawn on the Barmsteine

Our move to Salzburg coincided with a spell of superb weather. Over the course of one week, I watched the morning sunrise three times from the summit of the Barmsteine - kleiner and großer. An early start but a great warm-up to the working day.

Halfway up Untersberg

For our first weekend as residents of Salzburg we decided to hike up the Doppelsteig path on Untersberg. This beautiful 2000m peak of the Berchtesgaden Alps peers down on Salzburg from above, and also happened to be covered in quite a lot of snow. We bailed before the summit and traversed instead to the Toni Lenz Hutte with its welcome Austrian sight of mountain cake and beer.
